Calgon Water Softener

Calgon water softener

Calgon water softener is used to neutralize the hardness in water. The hardness causing elements such as calcium and magnesium salts are restricted from formation due to the sodium phosphate contained in the water softener. The main function of Calgon water softener is to remove the excess of calcium salts present in water. Calgon water softeners are commercially used for their cleansing property in various industries like laundry and water purification plants.

Calgon water softeners were launched in 1956. Jeremiah Colman went into business in 1814 milling flour, and went on to make starch and laundry blue. Ten years later, Johann A. Benckiser set up a chemical business, and the two companies were to become rivals for almost two centuries. In the 1840s Isaac Reckitt also started dealing in household products, mainly starch, washing blue and polish. His company expanded rapidly and went international 40 years later. In 1938, Reckitt merged with Colman to become Reckitt & Colman Ltd. In 1956, Benckiser launched Calgon water softeners and continued to take the lead in detergents and fabric softeners. It wasn’t until 1999 that these two companies merged to produce Reckitt Benckiser, the world’s leading maker of household cleaning products.

The use of Calgon water softeners over the years have resulted in long lasting of clothes, smoothening of skin and have improved the cleansing action of soaps and other detergents considerably. An increase of hardness in water makes it difficult for soaps and other cleansing agents to form lather thereby decreasing their efficiency to a great extent. There are various water softeners available in the market but most of them are used with water to remove the scales which are formed on washing machines or in bathing tubes. Whereas Calgon water softeners are mixed with water and are used as preventive agents. Comprising of ingredients like polycarboxylates and sodium hexametaphosphates, the Calgon water softeners help in softening of the hard water and also help in reducing the acidic property of water.

People must be very careful with the use of Calgon water softeners. Due to its strong neutralizing property it can be very if swallowed and can be a severe irritant if goes into eyes. Calgon products must be kept safe and away from the reach of children.
